I considered my Uncle one of my better friends for much of my life.  He often told me he considered my Mom his older sister.   Still, I found it odd that he always commented that if my Grandparents died, my mom and dad would get a modest majority of the inheritance.  My mom had a modest amount in their will tied to their final home sale, as a thank you for taking better care of them in their declining years than either of their sons.  When my grandmother passed, while my dad was succumbing to his demons, my uncle smelled an opportunity.  The rest is history.
